Swifts

Swifts return to Ingleby Road. Great to see them whizzing up and down the road again. Numbers were down last year but I suppose that's only to be expected as more houses get refurbished, leaving less roofs to nest under.

Blue tits...3rd year

Posted by Peter Gordon on April 13, 2012 at 5:45 AM Comments comments (0)

The blue tits I have filmed nesting for the past couple of years in my garden in South Woodford are back and the female is laying eggs this morning. They started visiting the nest box again in December..and have been visiting with increased regularity since then.

I'll post videos over the coming weeks as the eggs hatch and the various happy/traumatic scenes ensue!

In other news, on the Roding last weekend (South Woodford section), there were 3 Egrets together, 2 Herons together and a Cormorant. Also, 3 Sparrowhawks (2 of these were together over my house as I left to go to the river) and 1, poss 2 Kestrels. I have pictures of all of these which I may post over the weekend.

I've also been looking after an unwell Woodpigeon which seems to have a lump on its breast - poss broken bone. It's been pottering around for a couple of weeks now and either can't fly or doesn't want to but is eating and drinking well. I think the Sparrowhawk over my house last weekend was looking at it but then got distracted by another Sparrowawk.
